Look and sound great. No studio required.

The single biggest upgrade is height. A camera looking up at you is not a good look for anybody.

• Raise the laptop. Prop it on a stack of books or a box so the little camera lens at the top of your screen sits right at your eye line, and points straight out at you, not up your nose.
• Using a webcam? Clip or mount it at eye height, centered over your screen.
• Look at the lens, not yourself. The lens is where the eye contact lives. Glancing at your own face on screen reads as looking away.
• Frame it chest up. You in the middle, a little room above your head. Not too close, not across the room.

This is the one that makes or breaks it. People forgive soft video. They click away from bad audio in seconds.

• Best case: use a mic. A small external mic, or even the mic on wired earbuds or AirPods, beats your laptop speakers by a mile.
• No mic? Pick the right room. A smaller room with soft stuff in it. Rug, couch, curtains, a bookshelf. Soft surfaces soak up the sound.
• Avoid the bare box. A big empty room with hard walls and no furniture echoes, and you end up sounding far away and hollow.
• Close the door. One closed door kills most of the noise from the rest of the house.

Light is simpler than people think. There is really one rule.

• Face the light. Sit facing a window or a lamp so the light lands on your face, not behind you.
• Never backlit. A bright window behind you turns you into a dark shadow. If the window is at your back, spin around.
• One soft light wins. A single lamp in front of you beats any expensive setup. You do not need more than that.

Nothing derails a good take like a phone buzzing or a door opening. Two minutes of prep saves the whole conversation.

• Phone on Do Not Disturb, face down and out of reach.
• Silence the computer too. Close email, messages, and anything that dings or pops a notification mid-sentence.
• Tell the house. Let the people around you know you are recording for about thirty minutes.
• Pets and kids. Handle them if you can. If one wanders in, no big deal, we roll with it. It happens.

Do not stress about getting every detail right on your own. When we start the call, we take a couple of minutes to look at your framing, check your light, and listen to your sound. If something needs a tweak, we tweak it right then. Then we forget about all of it and just talk. That is when the good stuff happens.
